How much is car sales tax in New York?

New York charges 4% state sales tax plus the local rate for the county or city where you live, not where you buy. Registration runs for two years and is priced by the vehicle's weight.

For a dealer sale, subtract your trade-in from the price and multiply by the combined state and local rate for your address.

The two-year registration fee climbs in 100-lb steps, from $26 for vehicles up to 1,650 lb to $140 for vehicles over 6,950 lb. Vehicles with six or more cylinders and electric vehicles pay at least $32.50.

Plates are $25 and the title certificate is $50. Counties add a vehicle use tax: $10 for two years on vehicles up to 3,500 lb and $20 above that in most counties, and $30 in New York City. NYC and the commuter district counties (Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester) add a $50 MCTD fee.

  1. Taxable = price - dealer trade-in
  2. Tax = taxable x combined rate for purchaser's residence
  3. Total = tax + title + plates + registration + county use tax + MCTD fee + doc fee
