How much is car sales tax in Alaska?
Alaska is one of the few states with no statewide sales tax on vehicles. What you pay depends on where you live: some municipalities charge their own sales tax, and many charge a municipal motor vehicle registration tax (MVRT) based on location and model year.
If your municipality has a sales tax, it's applied to the price minus your trade-in. If it doesn't, there's no tax on the purchase at all.
Registration runs for two years. A passenger car, pickup or cargo van costs $100, a motorcycle $60 and a non-commercial trailer $30. Registering in person (rather than by mail, online or at a contract office) adds $10.
The title is $15, and recording a lien is another $15. The MVRT, where it applies, is added at registration and depends on your municipality and the vehicle's model year.
Alaska is one of five states without a general state sales tax; the others are Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Each charges something different when you buy or register a car, so compare them in our overview of states with no sales tax on cars.
- Local tax = (price - trade-in) x municipal sales tax rate (if any)
- Registration = vehicle fee (+ $10 in person) + MVRT for location and model year
- Total = local tax + title + registration + lien + doc fee
