How much is car sales tax in Indiana?
Indiana charges a single statewide 7% sales tax on vehicles, with no local sales tax added. Every year after that, you also pay an annual vehicle excise tax at registration, based on the vehicle's original MSRP and age.
The taxable amount is the price minus your trade-in. Multiply by 7%. That's the whole sales tax calculation.
Registration has several small parts: $21.35 for a passenger vehicle, a $15 transportation infrastructure improvement fee, and an annual supplemental fee of $242 for electric vehicles or $81 for hybrids. The annual excise tax and any county or municipal surtax or wheel tax are added on top. Those depend on the vehicle and your county, so the example leaves them out.
A title costs $15 ($25 more for a speed title). Titling more than 45 days after purchase costs a $30 penalty, and late registration adds $15.
- Taxable = price - like-kind trade-in
- Tax = taxable x 7%
- Registration = registration + TIIF (or plate transfer) + EV/hybrid fee + annual excise + local surtax + wheel tax
- Total = tax + title + registration + doc fee
