How much is car sales tax in California?
California charges a statewide 7.25% base sales and use tax, plus district taxes that vary by where the car is registered. Unlike most states, a trade-in does not lower the tax: you pay on the full selling price. DMV fees are also unusually high because several of them are based on the car's value.
Take the full selling price (including the dealer's documentation charge) and multiply it by your combined rate: 7.25% plus any district taxes for your city or county.
The largest DMV charge is the vehicle license fee (VLF): 0.65% of the vehicle's value. You also pay a $76 registration fee, a $34 California Highway Patrol fee and a transportation improvement fee (TIF) of $33 to $231 depending on value. A $15 transfer fee applies when ownership changes.
Zero-emission vehicles from model year 2020 on pay a $121 road improvement fee, though not on a brand-new ZEV's first registration through a dealer. Gas cars up to six years old pay a $20 smog abatement fee.
California is one of the few states where a trade-in doesn't reduce the tax. Virginia and Oregon work the same way, and in Oklahoma a trade-in never reduces the excise tax. See how trade-ins affect car sales tax across states.
- Tax = full selling price x combined rate (trade-in does not reduce tax)
- Vehicle license fee = value x 0.65%
- DMV fees = VLF + registration + CHP + transportation improvement fee + road improvement fee (ZEV) + transfer + out-of-state fee + smog fees + plate + county fees
- Total = tax + DMV fees + doc fee
