How much is car sales tax in Idaho?

Idaho charges a flat 6% sales tax on vehicles. There's no county sales tax, though a few cities add a local option tax. How the 6% is applied depends on whether you buy from a dealer or from a private seller.

From a dealer, the taxable amount is the price minus your trade-in, plus the dealer's documentary fee. From a private seller, you pay 6% on the full purchase price with no trade-in credit. The county assessor or the transportation department collects it when you title the car.

Registration depends on the vehicle's age: $69 for a car one or two years old, $57 for three to six years, and $45 for seven years or older, plus a $1.25 emergency medical services fee. Battery-electric vehicles add $140 a year and plug-in hybrids $75. Regular hybrids pay nothing extra.

The state title fee is $14, and your county adds an administrative fee. Filing for a title more than 30 days after the sale costs a $20 penalty.

  1. Dealer: taxable = price - trade-in + doc fee
  2. Private: taxable = purchase price (no trade-in credit)
  3. Tax = taxable x 6% (+ local option tax)
  4. Title = $14 + county admin fee
  5. Registration = age-based fee + county admin + EMS fee + EV/PHEV fee
  6. Total = tax + title + registration + doc fee
