About US Vehicle Tax Calculator
US Vehicle Tax Calculator helps car buyers estimate what they'll owe in sales tax, title and registration before they reach the DMV counter.
Why we built it
Buying a car means paying a stack of state and local charges that are rarely explained in one place. Every state handles them differently: some charge sales tax, some charge a one-time excise or highway use tax, some cap the tax at a fixed amount, and a few charge no sales tax at all. We built one consistent calculator for all 51 jurisdictions (the 50 states plus Washington, DC).
Where our numbers come from
Every rate and fee on this site comes from an official source: a state DMV or motor vehicle division, a department of revenue, or the state statute itself. Each state page lists the exact pages we used.
- Last full review: October 7, 2026.
- Verification labels: a state is marked Verified when every figure was confirmed on an official page, and Partially verified when some figures could not be confirmed. Those figures are listed on the state's page so you know which ones to double-check.
- Local rates: city and county rates change often, so the calculator asks you to enter yours rather than guessing.
How we handle corrections
States change fees often, usually on January 1 or July 1. We recheck sources regularly and update the date on each page when we do. If you find a figure that doesn't match your DMV or an official page, please contact us with the link and we'll review it.
What we are not
US Vehicle Tax Calculator is an independent website. We are not a government agency, a DMV, a dealer or a tax adviser, and we don't process registrations or payments. Our results are estimates. See our disclaimer for details.
Who runs this site
I'm Abdel, and I run US Vehicle Tax Calculator. I work in insurance, and that work is why I started this site: buying a car comes with a stack of costs beyond the price, and I wanted a clear, sourced way to see them before you sign.
I'm not a tax adviser or a DMV employee. U.S. car tax rules are spread across 51 different government websites, each with its own terms and fee schedules, so this site puts them side by side in one place.
I check every rate and fee against each state's own DMV, revenue department or statute pages, link those sources on every state page, and mark anything I couldn't confirm. When states change their fees, I recheck the affected pages and update the date.
