How much is car sales tax in Nevada?
In Nevada, only dealer sales are subject to sales tax, charged at your county's combined rate. Private-party, family and gift transfers aren't taxed. Every year, though, you pay a governmental services tax (GST) based on the vehicle's original MSRP.
For a dealer purchase, subtract your trade-in from the price and multiply by your county's combined sales tax rate.
The GST starts from a 'DMV valuation' of 35% of the original MSRP. That valuation is depreciated to 95% after the first year, then by 10% more each year, down to a floor of 15%. GST is 4% of the depreciated amount, with a $16 minimum. Clark and Churchill counties add a 1% supplemental GST.
A first-time Nevada title is $28.25, and passenger registration is $33. Motorcycles add a $6 safety fee.
- Sales tax (dealer only) = (price - trade-in) x county combined rate
- GST = max($16, 35% of MSRP x depreciation factor x 4%)
- Supplemental GST (Clark/Churchill) = depreciated value x 1%
- Total = sales tax + GST + supplemental GST + title + registration + doc fee
Nevada car tax example with real numbers
Dealer purchase of a new car
You buy a new car for $30,000 (MSRP $32,000) and trade in your old one for $5,000. For this example, assume a 8% county sales tax rate (your county's rate may differ).
- Taxable amount: $30,000 − $5,000 = $25,000.
- Sales tax: $25,000 × 8% = $2,000.
- GST: 35% of $32,000 is $11,200; at the 95% first-year factor and 4%, that's $425.60.
- With the title and registration, the estimated first-year total is $2,486.85 (add 1% supplemental GST in Clark or Churchill County).
