How much is car sales tax in Colorado?

Colorado's state sales tax on vehicles is 2.9%, but county, city and special-district taxes often more than double it. The other big cost is the specific ownership tax (SOT), an annual tax based on the car's original MSRP that works like a property tax.

For a dealer purchase, start with the price, subtract your trade-in and add any mandatory dealer fees, which Colorado taxes. Private sales get no trade-in exclusion. Multiply by the combined rate for your registration address.

Registration is built from many small parts: a $4 clerk hire fee, an age fee ($12, $10 or $7), about $4 in statutory fees, and FASTER road and bridge surcharges based on weight. Plug-in vehicles add a $63.05 fee plus a road usage fee ($26 for battery EVs, $13 for plug-in hybrids from July 2026).

The SOT taxes 85% of the original MSRP: 2.1% in year one, 1.5% in year two, 1.2% in year three, 0.9% in year four and 0.45% in years five to nine. From year ten it's a flat $3.

  1. Taxable base = price - trade-in (dealer only) + mandatory dealer fees
  2. Tax = taxable base x combined rate (state + county + city + district)
  3. Subtract tax paid to another state if bought out of state
  4. Registration = clerk hire + age fee + statutory fees + FASTER road + FASTER bridge + base registration + emissions + EV fees
  5. Specific ownership tax = 85% of MSRP x year rate (flat $3 from year 10)
  6. Total = tax + title + registration + specific ownership tax

Colorado car tax example with real numbers

New car from a dealer in the Denver area

You buy a new car for $30,000 (MSRP $32,000), trade in your old car for $7,000 and pay a $600 dealer fee. Local taxes at your address total 5%.

  1. Taxable amount: $30,000 − $7,000 + $600 = $23,600.
  2. State tax at 2.9%: $684.40. Local taxes at 5%: $1,180.
  3. First-year SOT: 85% of $32,000 = $27,200, × 2.1% = $571.20.
  4. With title and registration fees, your first-year cost is about $2,500.20, before the base registration fee for your weight class.
