How much is car sales tax in Mississippi?

Mississippi charges a 5% sales or use tax on most vehicles (3% on trucks over 10,000 lb that carry property). But the biggest part of a Mississippi tag bill is often the county ad valorem tax, a property tax set by your county, city and school district.

Subtract your trade-in from the price and multiply by 5%. Manufacturer rebates don't reduce the taxable amount. If a Mississippi dealer already collected the tax, you don't pay it again at the tag office.

Ad valorem tax is based on an assessed value of 30% of the vehicle's true value (at least $100), multiplied by the millage rates where you live. Because millage varies by district, it isn't included in the example below. A legislative tag credit may reduce it.

Fixed fees are small: a $9 title, a $14 first-time registration ($12.75 to renew) and a privilege tax of $15 for cars, vans and RVs ($7.20 for pickups, $8 for motorcycles).

  1. Taxable base = price - trade-in
  2. Sales tax = taxable base x 5% (3% for qualifying heavy trucks)
  3. Assessed value = max($100, 30% x true value)
  4. Ad valorem = assessed value x mills / 1,000, minus any legislative tag credit
  5. Total = sales tax + title + registration + privilege tax + ad valorem + EV/hybrid fee + doc fee

Mississippi car tax example with real numbers

Dealer purchase with a trade-in

You buy a car for $25,000 and trade in your old one for $5,000.

  1. Taxable amount: $25,000 − $5,000 = $20,000.
  2. Sales tax: $20,000 × 5% = $1,000.
  3. Title, registration and privilege tax add $38.
  4. Estimated total: $1,038, plus your county's ad valorem tax.
