How much is car sales tax in Kansas?

Kansas charges 6.5% state sales tax on vehicles, plus a local rate. When the local rate where you bought the car differs from the rate where you'll register it, the higher of the two applies.

For a dealer sale, subtract your trade-in from the price and add the dealer's documentation fee, which is taxable in Kansas. A manufacturer rebate doesn't reduce the taxable amount. Private (isolated) sales are taxed on the selling price.

Multiply by 6.5% plus the higher local rate. Dealers collect at their own location's rate, so you may owe additional compensating use tax if your home rate is higher.

The title is $10. Passenger registration is $30 for vehicles up to 4,500 lb and $40 above that. From January 1, 2026, alternative-fuel vehicles pay a category fee instead of the passenger fee: $70 for a hybrid, $100 for a plug-in hybrid and $165 for an all-electric vehicle. County personal property tax is billed separately.

  1. Taxable base = price - trade-in + doc fee (rebate not subtracted)
  2. Tax = taxable base x (6.5% + higher-of local rate)
  3. Total = tax + title + registration + property tax + lien fee + doc fee
